At present in the Smolensk oblast function 7 000 trade enterprises, 1 686 public catering enterprises, 65 markets. About 20.5 thousand worker are engaged in the sphere of retail trade and 8 100 people work at public catering enterprises.

In the sphere of trade modern enterprises have been set up, measuring up to new economic conditions: trade houses, markets and micro-markets, private trade enterprises, trade intermediary organizations, joint trade and intermediary enterprises.

In 2005 the Smolensk oblast took the 5 place among the subjects of the Central Federal Okrug of the RF by the volume of retail trade turnover.

In 2005 the turnover of retail trade made up 39 billion rubles, which in terms of commodity output is 5% more, than in 2004.

Most active working on the regional market in 2005 were companies: PK "Lavash", trading network "Magnit", "Yabloko", OAO "Smolensk Pharmatsia".
