There are 156 health care institutions in the region, including 54 hospitals, 10 dispensaries, 9 municipal out-patient centers, 12 dentist policlinics, 41 out-patient units in the regional districts, regional Center for AIDS Prevention, 2 orphanages (for babies), 3 health-improving centers.

There are 5222 doctors and 9680 medical specialists working in the region. The provision of doctors per 1000 of population is 51.2 1and provision of support medical specialists - 95.

Doctors and medical specialists are trained in the Smolensk Medical Academy and 2 medical colleges. The Smolensk Medical Academy has 8 departments, including therapeutic, pediatric, dentistry, pharmaceutical, school of nurses, on-the-job training department. The staff of the Medical Academy comprises 430 lecturers, including 52 Doctors of Sciences, 243 PhD holders working in 57 chairs. The total number of students is 2401.

Smolensk regional clinical hospital - is a major medical institution of the region. with the capac-ity for 1235 beds. It has 27 therapy departments, including 17 surgical and 10 therapeutic, a consulting out-patient department for 500 visits per shift. The hospital provides the following diagnostic examina-tions: computer tomography, nuclear-magnetic-resonance tomography, tests of hormones in blood se-rum, endoscopic diagnosis and surgery, lithotripsy. State-of-the-art methods in plasma gall-bladder sur-gery are used as well as new methods for larynx and trachea rehabilitation surgery. ECG monitoring and telemetric consulting is also provided.

Smolensk pediatric clinical hospital has a 255 capacity and a consulting out-patient department for 306 visits per shift. The hospital operates a digital X-ray equipment, gastroduodenoscopy, vagino-scopy, electrical neuromyography, electroencephalography, ECG monitoring. Problem training for chil-dren with chronically pathologies (bronchial asthma, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders). The doctors of the pediatric hospital are conducting children's arterial hypertension research jointly with the Mos-cow Clinical Research Center as well as immunoprophlaxis with premature babies and screening for the determination of the ECG norm with children jointly with the Association of Cardiologists of Russia.

Smolensk regional oncological dispensary has 190 beds, the out-patient department has a capac-ity of 100 visits per shift.

Smolensk medical exercises dispensary has 8 divisions, including medical prevention unit and youth clinic and capacity of 353 visits per shift. ECG monitoring, virus diagnosis and stress analyzer are used. Primary attention is focused on comprehensive rehabilitation of disabled children, leading sports-men. post-injury rehabilitation.

The research Center for antimicrobial chemotherapy is conducting a study of diffusion of the an-tibiotic resistant transmissible diseases agents in Russia and conducts the research of the mechanisms of resistance. The Center operates clinical microbiology, pharmaepidemiology, pharmaeconomics units, laboratory of clinical and molecular microbiology equipped in accordance with the international stan-dards. The Center is introducing new information technologies in its activities and distance education.

The regional hospital specialists are conducting joint research with the Tahoka University (Ja-pan) on heredity and risk factors influence on the development of cardio-vascular disease.

Smolensk regional dentist policlinic (470 visits per shift) provides a wide variety of dentist ser-vices, including application of gutta-percha pins, endodontic preparations, implants. New progressive methods of periodontitis treatment have been introduced.

Smolensk Center for AIDS Prevention operates modern laboratory equipment and performs di-agnosis of pre-natal infections, virus hepatitis, biochemical screening of pregnant women for congenital anomalies and HIV.

JSC "Smolensk Pharmatia" is a leading pharmaceutical enterprise with branches in all districts of the region. It operates as a partner of the federal distributor "Protec" as far as provision of subsidized drugs is concerned. "Smolensk Pharmatia" is also an authorized organization supplying medical prod-ucts and drugs to health care institutions of Smolensk region.

The state enterprise "Medtechnika" provides diversified equipment and after-sales-services to health care institutions and has sufficient premises for allocating assembly production of different medi-cal products.

The Health Care Department of Smolensk region has developed 17 regional special purpose fi-nancing programs and participates in the implementation of 4 other programs including "Prevention and combating socially significant diseases in Smolensk region between 2003-2006", "Healthy child", "Dis-abled children", Prevention and treatment of AG in Smolensk region between 2003-2008", "Develop-ment of the replacement nephritic therapy in Smolensk region between 2005-2007, "Development of the blood bank service and its components in Smolensk region between 2005-20010", "Reorganization of the psychiatric service in Smolensk region between 2005-2008", "Improvement of the working condi-tions in the state health care institutions between 2005-2008", "Improvement of the logistical support of the health care institutions of Smolensk region in 2005".

Recently the preparatory work for construction of the modern diagnostic center in Smolensk is underway.
