| The settlement Shumjachi is situatedat at a distance of 105
km to the South of Smolensk. Till the XVIII century Shumjachi had been the Landowner's
settlement and then just a place in the province of Mogiljov. Before the Revolution it was
famous for its commerce: the fairs, taking place in Shumjachi, were known not only within
these places. Since 1922 Shumjachi is in the Smolensk region. Glass industry began to
develop here in the XIX century. The Glass-works of the 1st of May is still famous for its
production. The products from crystal and coloured glass is popular not only within Russia
but even abroad.
In 1920 one of the most famous fantasist, the author of 500 works of art and scientific
books – A. Azimov was born in the Village Petrovichi of the Shumjachi district .
